Have you ever shaken a snow globe and wondered what it would be like to be trapped inside? Keep reading to see how this snow globe writing activity will get your kids excited about some winter writing!
The Snow Globe Family
One of my favorite read aloud books for January is The Snow Globe Family by Jane O' Connor. It's the story of a little family that lives in a snow globe on the mantel.
They have long been forgotten and their snow has settled in the snow globe. They wish someone would come along and shake things up and the most unlikely character helps them out! This story is the perfect way to begin this creative writing lesson!
Snow Globe Writing Activity
After reading the story, I show the students my personal collection of snow globes. I've been collecting plastic snow globes since I was a child and I pass them around and let the kids shake them and look inside.
We talk about all the different scenes and what it might be like to live in a snow globe. Then I tell the students that they will be writing a personal narrative. I show them this chart and explain the different parts of a personal narrative.
Shared Writing
I use an enlarged version of this free snow globe writing paper and together, we do a shared writing for “If I Lived In A Snow Globe”. The students help me compose my writing and I show them how to write a topic sentence, details using the words first, next and last and a closing sentence.
Snow Globe Craft
I have each student put on their hat and coat and take a photo of them outside. I print them out in color and crop them ahead of time. The students pose to look like they are shoveling snow, throwing snowballs or making snow angels.
The students make a simple snow globe craft with this free template. They draw a snowy scene in their snow globe and glue the photo of themselves inside. We sprinkle a bit of fake snow from the craft store inside and top it with a clear plastic plate. I hot glue these in place to make sure no snow escapes from their snow globe.
Independent Writing
Finally, the students write their own personal narrative – If I Lived In A Snow Globe. They use this free writing template. This is the perfect winter writing activity for those cold and snowy January days! Click here to grab this freebie for your classroom.
