Are you looking for a quick and easy Halloween writing prompt for kindergarten or 1st grade? Take a look at this cute little writing activity that we did with the book Room On The Broom by Julia Donaldson.
Read Aloud
If you're looking for a not too scary Halloween read aloud, take a look at the book Room On The Broom! It's a super fun rhyming book about a little witch and her cat who are happily flying through the air until her hat blows away. Next thing you know, everything is flying away! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. It's a funny little book and a great mentor text for some Halloween themed creative writing.
Take Photos
This book lends itself perfectly to your fall writing activities. Before starting your lesson, a day or two in advance, take some photos of your students pretending to ride a broom. Have them stand as though they are riding a broom and snap a few photos. It's a good idea to cut the photos out for the students because it will be difficult for them to cut close enough to the edge.
Next, create a simple broom using a strip of brown paper and a triangle of yellow paper. Then, fringe the ends of the yellow paper to look like the broom and this will give your picture a 3D effect. Finally, have your students glue themselves riding the broom in their picture and add two or three other people or animals riding with them.
Writing Activity
After your students have completed their picture, it's time for some creative writing. Have your students write who they would take with them on their broom and where they would go. This spooky Halloween writing prompt turns out adorable every year.
