Dental health activities for first grade kids are perfect to do in February. Did you know that's the official National Dental Health month? So of course, no lesson about teeth would be complete without talking about the Tooth Fairy!
First grade is the year for Tooth Fairy visits! Sometimes it feels like teeth are falling out every day, so this week we decided we would write a letter to the the Tooth Fairy as part of our dental health activities!
We started our lesson with a story that I love called What Does the Tooth Fairy Do With Our Teeth?
It's the perfect book to spark some conversation about this elusive little fairy!
After our story, we brainstormed a list of questions we wanted to ask the Tooth Fairy. The kids were really curious to ask things like….what do you do with the teeth and how do you get under the pillow without waking us up???
Next we worked together in shared writing to compose a class letter to the tooth fairy. I modeled for the students how to write a letter. We made sure to have a heading, greeting, body, closing and signature.
Finally, it was time for the students to write their own letters to the Tooth Fairy. They needed to tell her 2-3 things about themselves and then ask at least 1-2 questions. They finished the project with this cute Tooth Fairy craft.
I told the students I would mail the letters to the Tooth Fairy and a couple of days later she answered us back! You can imagine how thrilled my kids were when this basket of goodies arrived at our door!
There was an official letter from the Tooth Fairy…..
And each student got a little box of treasures from the enchanted forest! I picked up some little rocks and sparkly stuff from my local craft store and packaged them in some cute boxes I found at the Dollar Tree.
Each child also received a new toothbrush and toothpaste, compliments of the Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures program. If you are a K-1 educator you can request a free dental health kit each school year!

Here are a few of the other things the students found in their box from the Tooth Fairy.
I found this garland and cut it in little pieces to make fairy wands for each student.
These little star beads became wishing stars!
These coins from the craft store became Tooth Fairy money.
These little craft rocks became magic reading rocks! During silent reading time the kids held them in their hand when reading and they swore it made them read better!!
Little star confetti gave the boxes a little more sparkel and magic!
Finally, the kids each made a special Tooth Fairy door hanger to hang on their door every time they lose a tooth. Now the Tooth Fairy will know just where to find them!
